Can The Keto Diet Help Boost Fertility?
By SABIKA HASSAN
The ketogenic or "keto" diet focuses on getting your fats from sources of protein, instead of high-carb foods. Keto is one of the popular alternative diets around because it can help balance blood sugar levels, prevent heart disease, reduce neurological problems, and regulate hormones — but can it help with fertility?
A 2018 study published in AACE Clinical Case Reports suggests that the keto diet holds promising results for women experiencing fertility issues due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This hormonal imbalance disorder may worsen with weight gain, and since the keto can result in weight loss, it can also mediate hormonal issues.
The keto diet may also be helpful for men, according to functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole, who believes that the current diet of most males can interfere with healthy sperm formation. Cutting down on sugar and focusing on foods with healthy fats, such as nuts or seafood, can boost sperm count and help women get pregnant, says Everyday Health.
