How Caffeine Impacts Your Bladder
By ANNE TAYLOR
Caffeine is an excellent way to get an energy boost, but it can also have some unwanted side effects. The consensus is that 400 milligrams of caffeine per day are safe for most adults, but women who consume more than 330 milligrams daily are significantly more likely to develop urinary incontinence.
Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production and irritates the bladder, thus worsening urinary urgency and frequency. To avoid constant bathroom breaks, caffeine drinkers need to stay well-hydrated throughout the day or try decaffeinated versions, and people with bladder problems may want to limit caffeine intake or avoid it altogether.
Caffeine is also a stimulant, so when consumed in moderation, it can improve alertness, focus, and physical performance, and it increases dopamine levels in the brain — enhancing mood and motivation. However, too much caffeine can cause side effects like jitteriness, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.
