Is Washing Your Hair Everyday Actually Bad For You?
By KIMBERLY SMITH
While many people prefer to wash their hair daily to make it clean and healthy-looking, some only do it every few days. Your hair contains a community of bacteria known as microbiome, and frequent shampooing can disrupt it and lead to split ends, breakage, and drab hair — so how often should you wash your hair, really?
How often one should shampoo their hair depends on their hair type. According to WebMD, the best way to know how often to wash is to experiment, and as long as there are no developing scalp problems — such as swelling, a side effect of too much washing, or dandruff, a side of too little — one can wash their hair as little as once a week.
People with fine hair who sweat a lot or live in a humid area may need to shampoo daily, while people with oily hair need special shampoo and conditioner that does not contain sulfates or silicones before they try washing every day. Thicker hair collects less oil, requiring less washing, while dry and curly hair can often go days without washing.
