The Strange Thing That Happens To Your Pee When You Take Ibuprofen
By ERIN MARIE
Ibuprofen is an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Research has shown that it can reduce frequent nighttime urination — a condition known as nocturia.
A 2006 American Journal of Epidemiology study found that the regular use of NSAIDs reduces the risk of developing an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
BPH leads to difficulty initiating urination, a weaker urine stream, and nocturia. A 2019 clinical trial examined the effects of Paxerol, a medication that contains ibuprofen.
The trial focused on patients with overactive bladders experiencing severe nocturia. The results showed that Paxerol significantly reduced nocturia symptoms compared to a placebo.
Despite these promising results, experts advise caution and recommend consulting with a physician before using ibuprofen or similar medications to self-treat urinary issues.
