The Vitamin You Need If You Have Arthritis
By ANNE TAYLOR
Arthritis is a painful condition that causes joints to become inflamed and sensitive, and symptoms can range from mild to extreme pain. While talking to the doctor will help find the best treatment, some vitamins can help reduce symptoms more naturally than prescription medication.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are two common supplements people with arthritis can use to find relief, as these are natural components of cartilage. Polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids may also reduce inflammation; however, they seem to work better for rheumatoid arthritis than for osteoarthritis, according to Chris D'Adamo, Ph.D., of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine.
While taking over-the-counter supplements is generally safe, they are not regulated by the FDA and can also interact with medications. Farshad Fani Marvasti, MD, MPH, of The University of Arizona, recommends “finding an integrative physician who can help them or investing in a [subscription with an] independent testing company” before taking any supplements.
