Turkey Bacon Versus Regular Bacon: Which Is Better For Your Cholesterol?
By NIKO VERCELLETTO
Bacon is a breakfast staple in many Americans' diets, but it is high in cholesterol and saturated fat, as well as possibly containing carcinogens. Health-conscious people have turned away from regular bacon in favor of turkey bacon, but is turkey bacon healthier than pork bacon?
A two-ounce serving of turkey bacon contains 218 calories and 4 grams of saturated fat, compared to pork bacon, which has 268 calories and 8 grams of fat. However, the saturated fat in that small serving of turkey bacon is still quite high.
Additionally, turkey bacon actually contains more sodium than pork bacon, with 1,900 milligrams in a two-ounce serving, compared to pork’s 1,300. Turkey bacon does have "about 20% less cholesterol than regular pork bacon," according to cardiologist Dennis Bruemmer, but it still has quite a bit.
