Is It Ever Normal To Wake Up Still Tired?

If you've ever woken up feeling groggy and sleepy, you're not alone. There are many reasons you may not have slept well the night before and many solutions to those issues. However, some people still feel sleepy in the morning even when they have excellent bedtime and sleep habits. According to Mindbodygreen, you shouldn't worry too much about this as long as that sleepy feeling wears off in less than 10 minutes. It is normal to experience sleep inertia, which is a feeling of grogginess after being woken from a deep sleep, immediately after your alarm goes off.

It would also be considered normal to wake up tired after getting a short or difficult night's sleep. While this isn't healthy in the long run, you can easily fix this issue by getting a good night's sleep the next night. You should be concerned, however, if you get enough sleep at night but still wake up tired every morning. If you aren't sure how to fix the problem, it may be time to visit your doctor and work on finding a solution.

Potential causes of a poor night's sleep

There are many things that can negatively affect your sleep and leave you groggy and tired in the morning. Eating spicy food at night can cause heartburn that may disrupt your efforts to fall asleep (via Medical News Today). Heartburn occurs when food and/or acid from the stomach leak up into the esophagus. Also regarding what you eat before bed, any food that is high in sugar will raise your insulin levels and give you a quick boost of energy that can make it hard to feel sleepy (via The Guardian).

It isn't just food that can affect your sleep habits. Checking social media before bed can ruin your sleep in multiple ways (via Sleep Foundation). Blue light, which is the type of light that is emitted by electronic screens tells our brains that it's time to wake up, not wind down. Social media can also increase feelings of anxiety and depression (via BBC Future). If you're worried about a lot of things while lying in bed, you'll have a hard time dozing off.
