Is It Possible To Get Rid Of Freckles?

Freckles may conjure mental images of youth and pigtails while bringing up nostalgic memories of long summer days by the pool. As delightful as these memories might be, not everyone loves their "tattoos" from the sun. That being said, is it possible to get rid of the freckles we have?

According to Healthline, there are multiple ways freckles can be lightened and prevented. However, it's important to understand what they are first. Freckles are made from a cluster of cells on the skin that have melanin. They are flat and tan or light brown in color. Freckles are not harmful or painful in any way and may appear after exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Urbo states that while a large percentage of the population boasts freckles on their skin, no one is born with them. While sun exposure has a lot to do with how many freckles you have, so do your genetics. It is actually in the same gene that also determines your hair color and can be passed down from both of your parents.

Retinoids, lasers, and DIY methods for removing freckles

One of the most effective ways to get rid of the freckles is with a laser, according to Healthline. First, make an appointment with your dermatologist or health care provider to discuss your needs and expectations. Addressing your freckles with a laser is considered relatively safe. However, it can still result in some side effects, including itching, swelling, or peeling on the treated area.

If lasering your skin sounds more off-putting than exciting, there are some do-it-yourself, natural methods you can try. NDTV Foods recommends gently massaging 2-3 teaspoons of lemon juice onto your skin to naturally lighten your freckles. Leave it on for 8-10 minutes, and repeat twice a day. You can also try almond oil, which is rich in vitamin A and vitamin E, to reduce the darkness of freckles. Rub the oil on your face nightly and keep it on for at least one hour before washing it off with lukewarm water to see the best results.

Many of us love a cute spray of freckles across the skin, as it can be both endearing and nostalgic of sunny weather. But if you're not a fan of your own, everything from DIY methods to lasers to help you erase those "tattoos" of summer.
