How Much Sugar Is In A White Claw?

Low-carb, bubbly alcoholic beverages have become very trendy nowadays, and you just may find one of the most popular cans pop up on your social media feed: White Claw. Before 2019, seltzers were mostly reserved for alleviating stomach aches. Now, seltzers have nudged their way onto supermarket shelves, but this time, with a kick of booze in them. Insider states that the hard seltzer market has recently become a multibillion-dollar industry and White Claw is one of the dominating brands making up 58% of the total market. Truly comes in second behind White Claw and both combined make up 75% of the market.

White Claw first launched its bubbly beverage in 2016 (via Thrillist). Serial entrepreneur and cocktail wizard, Anthony von Mandl's ingenuity resulted in a spiked seltzer drink that's low-carb, fruity, and 100 calories a pop. With the explosion of the low-carb craze, White Claw seems to fill a need for the adult beverage market — low-carb, low-sugar alcoholic beverages. So how does White Claw measure up?

White claw might be a better option for low-sugar adult beverages

According to Everyday Health, a 12 ounce can of White Claw contains 2 grams of sugar, making it a lower-sugar option over most adult beverages you'll find in the market. In terms of daily amounts, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 25 grams of sugar per day for women and 36 grams for men. In this sense, a single White Claw would make a small dent, but several could add up.

While White Claws may be low in sugar, carbs, and calories, moderation may still be key when it comes to any alcoholic beverages. "There are no real nutritional benefits from consumption of hard seltzer, as they are primarily just empty calories," Mia Syn, a registered dietician nutritionist, tells Everyday Health. "It's important to keep empty calories to a minimum. They provide energy, but no other nutrients like vitamins and minerals," she says.
