Here's How Long The Effects Of A Face Lift Will Last
For patients who wish to reduce visible signs of aging, a facelift procedure is performed by tightening loose skin on the neck and face (via University of Utah Health). While it won't rid the face of wrinkles, a facelift can address skin sagging along the cheeks and jaw, and contour the face to give patients a younger face shape, per the Mayo Clinic. While there are different kinds of facelift procedures, health experts at the University of Utah say that a standard facelift can leave skin looking 10 to 15 years younger.
Prior to the surgery, a plastic surgeon will take thorough stock of your medical history. Along with a physical exam, your doctor will gather information regarding any previous health conditions, prior surgical procedures, any medications taken, and more (via Mayo Clinic). Afterward, your surgeon will photograph your face from various angles and distances. Based on the health of your skin, face shape, and bone structure, among other factors, you and your doctor will decide what type of procedure to proceed with. Your doctor will also brief you on what physical changes you can expect following the surgery. The surgery can last from two to six hours (per University of Utah Health).
How to prepare for a facelift procedure
As we continue to grow older, so will our skin. Therefore, a facelift will not last indefinitely and drooping can reoccur. However, experts say the effects of a facelift can last for ten years (via Mayo Clinic).
Post-surgery, most patients can expect to resume regular activity within one to three weeks, per the University of Utah Health. It is suggested that patients prepare for the recovery process ahead of time, which can include coordinating child care, transportation to and from the appointment, and finding someone to care for them for the first 24 hours post-op. In addition, experts suggest having ready-to-eat meals available that are soft to chew such as pasta.
Within the first week following surgery, bruising and swelling may occur. Experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest the use of a cool compress to help alleviate the discomfort. Stitches are removed by the end of the first week, at which time patients can resume wearing makeup. After two weeks, the face should be mostly healed and the patient can likely resume daily activity.
Per the Mayo Clinic, be sure to follow any post-operative care instructions given to you by your doctor and to attend all follow-up appointments during the two months following the procedure.
