The Health Scare You Didn't Know Amy Schumer Had

Amy Schumer can make us laugh at almost anything. After all, it is her job as a comedian to find the humor in both light-hearted, as well as more serious, situations. However in recent years, she's experienced a serious health scare that was no laughing matter.

We're not talking about her near fatal surfing accident that happening back in her youth. This more recent threat to Schumer's health was a serious kidney infection that occurred in 2018. "Here's what I've been up to this week. I was hospitalized for 5 days with a horrible kidney infection," shares the "I Feel Pretty" star on social media via Us Weekly. In her classic dead-pan and sarcastic style, she continues, "I wanted to share this with you because this is sexy as hell but mostly because I was meant to go to London for the opening of 'I Feel Pretty' and my doctors have told me that's a no go," she says.

Kidney infections should always be taken seriously

Schumer goes on to say that she had to cancel her trip to Europe in order to put her health first. WebMD states that kidney infections, also called pyelonephritis, occur when your kidneys become overpopulated with bacteria or viruses that trigger health issues. It's a type of urinary tract infection (UTI), and should be taken seriously. Symptoms of kidney infections can include fever and chills, vomiting, upset stomach, and lower back and groin pain. The infection often starts out as a bladder infection which spreads to the kidneys. More serious implications of a kidney infection can include blood poisoning, permanent tissue damage in the kidneys, and complications with pregnancy.

While we don't know what the "Trainwreck" star's specific symptoms were, the fact that she was hospitalized for several days indicates that the symptoms may have been more severe. We appreciate that Schumer was open with fans about why she had to cancel her press tour. Luckily, it doesn't appear her missed plane to London affected her career in the long-run, and we're most grateful that she appears healthy today.
