Photos Of Melissa McCarthy From 2003 To Now Prove She's Committed To Her Wellness Journey

Melissa McCarthy has made it abundantly clear that she will not let the decades of fat-shaming she has endured in her career get under her skin. In a 2021 InStyle interview, the "Mike and Molly" star thought back to the time she was on a press tour for "Bridesmaids" and an interviewer had blatantly asked her, "'Oh, your tremendous size, you can actually work?'" McCarthy continued. "I just remember all the blood drained out of me. I thought, 'With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly.'"

Meanwhile, in a 2016 Refinery29 interview, the comedian pushed back against the idea that her weight was the most "interesting" thing about her, saying, "It can't be the first question every time, or a question at all." She firmly believed that there were more interesting things to talk about than a woman's physical appearance. During her InStyle interview, McCarthy also wondered why her male co-stars weren't subjected to similar questions about their bodies. Notably, in a 2023 People interview, McCarthy shared that she had only grown to fully accept her body in her 30s.

Around the same time, she had also made her peace with the fact that people wouldn't always have the nicest things to say about her fully embracing herself. So, when McCarthy ended up having one of the most dramatic celebrity weight-loss transformations, it wasn't to appease the critics by any means. Instead, McCarthy's wellness journey served as a huge testament to the fact that you can wholly love yourself as you change into a different version of yourself.

Melissa McCarthy tried an extreme diet in 2003

In a 2011 People interview, Melissa McCarthy revealed that she had gone on an all-liquid, 500-calorie-a-day diet when she was working on "Gilmore Girls" in 2003. Although the doctor-supervised diet had helped her lose 70 pounds in four months, she had no interest in going down a similar route in the future.

"I'd never do that again," McCarthy stated. "I felt starved and crazy half the time." With that in mind, it's safe to say that the comedian would agree with the idea that most people shouldn't even think about going on a crash diet.

Her perspective on weight changed during her first pregnancy in 2007

During her 2011 People interview, Melissa McCarthy shared that she had given herself complete food freedom during her first pregnancy in 2007. "It was the first time I ate something and didn't give it a second thought. If I wanted a piece of toast, I'd have one," the "Bridesmaids" star recalled. "It felt magical."

After having her second child in 2010, McCarthy told People that she was on a weight loss journey because she wanted to be a "healthier" version of herself for her little ones, not because she wanted to look a certain way.

She opened up about some important self-reflection in 2013

In a 2013 Us Weekly interview, Melissa McCarthy proclaimed, "I've been every size in the world." The "Spy" actor then thought back to the time she was in her 20s and desperately wanted to fit into a smaller clothing size.

However, by the time she entered her 40s, she realized that her desires to look a certain way were just a part of her growing up. After having kids with her husband, Ben Falcone, McCarthy realized that her energy was better spent focusing on her family life rather than obsessing over looks.

She lost a reported 50 pounds in 2015

According to Life & Style Magazine, Melissa McCarthy lost 50 pounds in 2015. During a 2015 appearance on "CBS' Mornings," the comedian shared that the ironic secret to her weight loss was taking things lightly and not obsessing over every little aspect of the process. Meanwhile, in a 2016 ExtraTV interview, she chalked up her weight loss to a "super boring life."

She elaborated, "You bring it real down, you don't do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30 — that's the trick." Based on Life & Style Magazine's report that McCarthy may have been following a high-protein diet, it seems she really took things down to the basics.

Melissa McCarthy grew more vocal about body positivity in 2016

Speaking to Redbook in 2016, Melissa McCarthy admitted that she was saddened to see how many young girls felt pressured to conform to a beauty standard set by a tiny portion of the population. After stating that she hoped her own young daughter wouldn't internalize that impossible standard, McCarthy said, "My message is that as long as everybody's healthy, enjoy and embrace whatever body type you have."

In a 2016 Instagram post, "The Heat" star similarly urged people to stop criticizing women for their bodies because it sent a message to young girls that achieving perfection is far more important than being healthy.

She chose to make sustainable lifestyle changes in 2018

During a 2018 appearance on "The Breakfast Club," Melissa McCarthy confirmed that she had been on a weight loss journey for the past five years. When asked why she had chosen not to undergo surgery to achieve her goals, McCarthy replied that she felt she would be better off going on a slow and sustainable journey.

The "Tammy" star also stressed that she didn't want to pressure herself with strict rules and instead favored a more laid-back approach to weight loss. She had also found it helpful to accept that the process might take longer because of the changes her body had undergone following two pregnancies.

A 2022 fashion choice reminded us of her past struggles with fashion

Speaking to The Guardian in 2016, Melissa McCarthy confessed that she had a tough time finding an outfit to wear to red carpets that didn't look like a "mother-of-the-bride" dress. Even on a regular basis, McCarthy had to settle for dark-colored and shapeless clothing due to limited options.

In McCarthy's view, the drab plus-sized clothing options sent a clear message: "'We don't want to see you, and we sure as hell know you don't want anybody to see you.'" By wearing a bright and colorful outfit in 2022, McCarthy sent a clear message of her own.

Melissa McCarthy began facing Ozempic chatter in 2024

Barbra Streisand apparently noticed the results of Melissa McCarthy's weight loss journey after looking at an Instagram photo she posted in 2024. Instead of messaging her privately, the Grammy winner accidentally left a now-deleted comment asking her if she was using Ozempic. However, McCarthy didn't take offense to the GLP-1 chatter that Streisand had inadvertently stirred.

Instead, she shared an Instagram video of her reading a magazine with Streisand gracing the cover. "The takeaway — Barbra Streisand knows I exist?" McCarthy said in the video. "She reached out to me. And she thought I looked good. I win the day."

Her weight loss caught the attention of more people in 2026

By 2026, Melissa McCarthy's weight loss had fans talking about Ozempic face as a compliment. After witnessing her transformation, many commentators on X praised McCarthy for dodging the Ozempic face by achieving her weight loss through slow and sustainable methods.

Some believed that GLP-1 medication may have helped her achieve her transformation in conjunction with lifestyle changes. All in all, it seems that even if McCarthy were to join the list of celebrities who have admitted to taking Ozempic and similar medications, it would still be difficult to write off the hard work that went into her transformation.
