For 14 years, "The Doctors" remained a fixture on television, providing expert-backed advice with a dose of entertainment. Initially, the talk show was hosted by Dr. Travis Stork and a panel of doctors. During a 2014 chat with The Chicago Tribune, Jay McGraw, who co-created the show with his father, Phil McGraw, AKA Dr. Phil, said that the show's early days were focused on "loud stories with a medical angle."
However, it wasn't until they did a segment on the color of children's snot that they realized they were better off answering more grounded questions. Thanks to the slight content pivot, they earned a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show in the Informative category in 2010. Over the years, Dr. Stork and his co-hosts also received Daytime Emmy nods for their work as talk show hosts. Despite the show's success with this format, it underwent some major changes after production was shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the 13th season of the show, the panel of doctors was replaced by a singular host, Dr. Ian Smith, and the live audience format was also axed. In 2021, "The Doctors" was hit by controversy, as Dr. Smith filed a lawsuit, alleging that he had faced racism and sexual harassment during his time on the talk show, per Page Six. The talk show ultimately wasn't renewed for a 14th season. Since then, some of the show's most recognizable faces have had plenty to keep them busy.
