Hayden Panettiere was brutally honest about her experience with postpartum depression. During a 2015 appearance on "Live with Kelly and Michael," Panettiere shared that her "Nashville" character Juliette Barnes' struggle with the condition hit close to home for her. Panettiere, who welcomed her daughter, Kaya, in 2014, said she found that there was a lot of misinformation about postpartum depression, with many people writing it off as a made-up condition or merely the result of hormonal changes. On the contrary, for Panettiere, the condition was "really painful and it's really scary." Then, in a 2016 post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Panettiere confirmed that she was "[taking] time to reflect holistically on [her] health and life" after realizing that she was using unhealthy coping mechanisms for the disorder.
In the years that followed, the "Heroes" alum only grew more open about dealing with postpartum depression. Speaking to Women's Health in 2023, Panettiere shared that she felt "extreme hopelessness" and "like all the walls [were] closing in" after welcoming her daughter. When she appeared on the "Jay Shetty Podcast" in May 2026, she opened up about other symptoms of postpartum depression she had experienced: "I wasn't connecting with [Kaya] the way that I knew I should be. ... I was full of stress and anxiety all the time." However, she was unable to identify her symptoms as postpartum depression because the women she knew only ever talked about the joys of motherhood.
Hayden Panettiere felt completely numb when she had postpartum depression
In Hayden Panettiere's 2026 memoir "This Is Me: A Reckoning," she wrote that she felt completely devoid of emotions after welcoming Kaya in 2014. "It wasn't panic that was sitting in my chest. It was nothing. A total blackout of emotion, like my soul was dead," Panettiere wrote while reflecting on her postpartum depression. Eventually, she began drinking alcohol to cope with her symptoms. During her appearance on the "Jay Shetty Podcast," the "Scream VI" actor said that while alcohol temporarily soothed her anxiety, it only added to her depression in the long run.
In her memoir, Panettiere shared that she woke up thinking about alcohol and heavily relied on it to get through the day. Somewhere between Seasons 3 and 4 of "Nashville," Panettiere sought treatment for addiction and officially received a postpartum depression diagnosis. During a 2017 appearance on "Good Morning America," the former child actor shared that she felt that postpartum depression had helped her become "a better mom" and enabled her to fully appreciate the strong bond she had formed with her daughter.
She went on to share a message with other women who may be in her shoes, saying, "[Having PPD] doesn't make you a bad person — doesn't make you a bad mother. It makes you a very strong, resilient woman. You've just got to let it make you stronger." While her struggles continued, she gave her ex-fiancé, former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko, full custody of their daughter in 2018. Panettiere's experiences ultimately shone a light on what mental health experts want people to know about postpartum depression.
