5 Celebrities Who Have Been Open About Experiencing Andropause, The 'Male Menopause'

Many celebrities have used their influence for good and shined a light on a lesser-talked-about aspect of aging: andropause. In a chat with Henry Ford Health, Dr. Ali Dabaja, a urologist at the organization, explained that andropause is a term used to describe the natural decline in testosterone that men face as they age, and it's a gradual process. It can also affect numerous aspects of a man's life.

On a mental level, men may experience symptoms like depression, low motivation, low self-confidence, reduced concentration, and insomnia. On a physical level, they can experience reduced muscle mass coupled with feelings of physical weakness, decreased bone density, and increased body fat. Men over 50 also face an increased risk of gynecomastia. On a sexual health level, they may experience infertility, reduced libido, and erectile dysfunction. Some aging men can avoid facing these symptoms altogether if their testosterone levels remain in the normal range.

Dr. Shalender Bhasin, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, explained that many factors influence testosterone production, saying, "The trajectory of age-related decline in testosterone level in men is influenced greatly by weight gain, lifestyle factors, and chronic diseases." According to Dr. Bhasin, testosterone levels can be naturally increased by exercising, losing weight, and getting adequate sleep. Notably, there are also several foods that actually kill testosterone, like mint, nuts, and flaxseed. Ultimately, when we look at the symptoms of celebrities who have experienced andropause, it's clear that every man experiences the hormonal shift differently.

Robbie Williams sees andropause as a natural part of aging

In September 2012, then-38-year-old Robbie Williams revealed to GQ that his body had basically stopped producing testosterone about a year prior (via News.com.au). To make up for the absence, the "Angels" singer had begun taking weekly testosterone injections. Williams made it abundantly clear that he was not ashamed of his condition and simply saw it as a part of his life's journey. It's worth noting that the NHS stresses that it's natural for men's testosterone levels to face a steady decline at a rate of about 1% a year as they go through their 30s.

Most men tend to face the effects of a testosterone deficiency beginning in their 40s and 50s, so it seems that andropause may have come on a bit sooner than average for Williams. While he initially tried to make up for the deficit in testosterone levels, he eventually seemed to have had no choice but to wholly embrace andropause. During an April 2023 interview with The Sun U.K., the "Feel" singer shared that he had stopped his weekly testosterone injections, explaining, "I was on testosterone for a while but, because I'm an addict, that had to stop. I got these massive square shoulders and started to look like a doorman. It wasn't a good look."

Still, he couldn't help but admit that he missed the sex drive he had when he was using the injections. Speaking to The Sun U.K. in October 2023, Williams offered an update on his andropause journey, saying, "The hair is thinning, the testosterone has left the building, the serotonin is not really here and the dopamine said goodbye a long time ago." He further shared, "I've used up all of the natural good stuff. I've got the manopause."

Shaun Ryder faced adverse symptoms when he paused testosterone replacement therapy

Speaking to Northern Life in 2020, Shaun Ryder shared that when he was in his late 40s, he learned that he had an under-active thyroid, which prevented his body from producing testosterone. Two years later, in a July 2022 chat with The Sunday Post, the Happy Mondays frontman revealed that he had initially been taking testosterone pills to make up for the deficit but had to stop taking the medication because it brought on further complications to his thyroid.

Due to the lack of testosterone in his body, Ryder soon began experiencing the symptoms of andropause. In an October 2023 interview with The Sun U.K., the "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" alum opened up about how he felt, saying, "I was tired all the time, could barely be bothered leaving the house," he continued. "My libido was gone and I was miserable." Additionally, when he spoke to The Guardian two years earlier in 2021, Ryder shared that he had also lost all of his hair only a week after he had stopped his testosterone treatment.

During his chat with The Sun U.K., Ryder was happy to share that his symptoms had subsided once he started using testosterone gel. The English singer went on to detail the role that the medication played in his life, saying, "If I haven't got my testosterone gel, I can't speak. I can't leave the house, I can't make eye contact."

Josh Duhamel had numerous reasons for starting testosterone replacement therapy

During a June 2025 appearance at a "Men's Health Lab" event, Josh Duhamel shared that although he had heard about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), nobody in his inner circle seemed all that interested in talking about it, possibly due to stigma. However, the "Ransom Canyon" star's interest in the therapy piqued after tests revealed that his testosterone levels were low (via People). Duhamel also shared that he had other personal reasons for seriously considering HRT, saying, "I took an inventory, a personal inventory, of how I was feeling, and I knew that I wasn't quite where I was at five, 10, years before."

When speaking to Forbes a month prior, Duhamel shared that he had started taking testosterone injections to make up for the deficit, and they worked wonders for him. "I had the urge to get back out and do the things I didn't have the desire to do anymore," the actor said of the improvements he had experienced. After starting treatment, he also had the energy to keep up with his 1-year-old and get through grueling workdays. Moreover, during the "Men's Health Lab" event, then-52-year-old Duhamel said that the treatment enabled him to stay "young and virile" for his wife, Audra Mari.

Frank Grillo faced numerous andropause symptoms

During a September 2025 appearance on Men's Health's "Strong Talk" podcast, Frank Grillo shared that as he entered his early 50s, he'd begun to notice that his athletic abilities as a professional boxer weren't quite what they used to be. At first, the "Peacemaker" star felt that his speed in the sport had reduced considerably. With time, he began to realize that he would also get tired doing MMA circuits he once coasted through.

Additionally, while on "The Future You" podcast that same month, Grillo revealed that his other symptoms included joint pain, difficulty recovering after workouts, fatigue, and the inability to sleep well at night (via Men's Health). Grillo told the "Strong Talk" podcast hosts that blood tests revealed that his testosterone levels were at 260. His doctors were notably shocked that he was able to push through grueling boxing training sessions when his levels were that low. For context, a low testosterone diagnosis is typically given to individuals whose levels are below 300 ng/dL.

Soon, Grillo started testosterone replacement therapy and found that it improved his ability to exercise as well as his mood, sleep quality, and sex drive. During his appearance on "Strong Talk," Grillo said that since he came from an industry where testosterone use was frowned upon, he would endure comments about being a "cheater." However, he made it clear that he wasn't deterred by those remarks, saying, "I'm an actor. I'm not the linebacker for the New York Giants. I'm not a competitive Olympic wrestler. I'm not playing for the New York Knicks. I'm not cheating at anything except aging."

Conan O'Brien found benefits in his declining testosterone levels

When Conan O'Brien appeared on the "Fresh Air" podcast in October 2019, host Terry Gross asked him why he had chosen to shake up his career at the age of 56. For O'Brien, the decision was motivated by a desire to make strong career moves rather than fading into retirement. However, the comedian also acknowledged that his naturally declining testosterone levels may have played a part in the decision.

By O'Brien's own admission, he felt as if he never had high testosterone to begin with, but aging had probably reduced his levels by "half." Over time, O'Brien and his loved ones began seeing more signs of how his declining testosterone levels were impacting him. During a July 2026 episode of the "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" podcast, the former talk show host recalled a conversation he had with his mother-in-law, saying, "I remembered once sort of talking about how I think I've grown wiser over the years, I'm not as intense as I used to be, I was very focused and very driven in my 20s and 30s and 40s." His mother-in-law believed that his declining testosterone levels were responsible for these changes.

Years prior, he'd shared his thoughts on testosterone in an October 2020 episode of the "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" podcast, saying, "There's a juice running through our bodies that is amazing in some ways ... but gives us stupid ideas." Subsequently, he wasn't too bothered when a doctor informed him that declining testosterone levels make men calmer as they age.
