Celebrities With Heterochromia - Aka Two Different Eye Colors

It's often said that the eyes are a window into the soul. Ironically, however, after a brief first meeting with someone, many people tend to walk away without ever actually taking note of the other person's eye color — unless that person has two different eye colors, that is. 

Heterochromia, a rare condition wherein a person has different-colored eyes, is usually harmless — but not always. "Although a large proportion of cases are the result of genetic mutation, heterochromia can also result from congenital disease or other ocular or systemic disorders," ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist Christine L. Larsen, MD, told VeryWell Health, before noting that it could benefit patients with different colored eyes to consult an ophthalmologist. It can also affect the iris in varying degrees, including the entire iris (complete heterochromia), a portion of the iris (sectoral heterochromia), or even just the ring of the iris (central heterochromia).

But just how rare is it to have two different colored eyes? Experts estimate that fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. have complete heterochromia. Fortunately, there are some celebrities with different-colored eyes that have helped raise awareness of this unique condition.

In July 2017, Kate Bosworth got candid about her experience with heterochromia on Instagram when she celebrated National Different Colored Eyes Day. "Thank you for sending love to my mutation today," she penned in a post that featured her half-hazel, half-blue left eye. In 2006, Bosworth told The Sydney Morning Herald that throughout her career, she was often advised to wear colored contacts so that her eyes were the same color. It wasn't until she filmed "Superman Returns" that she was given the green light to ditch the contacts.

In May 2024, Jane Seymour revealed during an appearance on "The Tamron Hall Show" that for a time, it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows when it came to her uniquely beautiful peepers. According to Seymour, she was actually fired from her job as a James Bond girl over her eyes. "I was fired from my first job for having two different-colored eyes. I have a green eye and a brown eye. That's supposed to be wrong," she quipped.

Actor and model Dominic Sherwood is perhaps best known for his role as a half-human, half-angel in "Shadowhunters." But it was his starring role in Taylor Swift's steamy music video for "Style" that really got people talking, though not for the reasons you might expect. "It's pretty obvious in the video that my eyes are different colors, and they actually are," he told HuffPost regarding all of the buzz about his differing eye colors. "People feel they're being ocularly tricked by my eyes. But no, they're actually blue and brown. I'm not trying to trick anyone."

Curiously, it once took British actor Alice Eve's former boyfriend nine whole months before he picked up on the fact that one of her eyes was blue and the other green. "He was like, 'Do you have different colored eyes?'" she recalled to Conan O'Brien during an appearance on his talk show in May 2012. "I was like, 'What are you joking? What have you been looking at 9 months in?'" Not surprisingly, Eve said he wasn't her boyfriend for long after that.

Actor Julia Roberts sent tongues wagging at the 1990 Golden Globes when she gave her then-rumored boyfriend, Kiefer Sutherland, a very pointed shoutout in her list of thank-yous while accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. "Most of all, my best friend. My beautiful blue-eyed, green-eyed friend, who gives me everything," she said, referring to his distinctly different colored eyes. "This is for her him, too."

Yes, your eyes can reveal surprising things about your health, and it is possible for them to change color; just ask actor Mila Kunis. The story goes that Kunis was not born with different-colored eyes. Instead, one of her eyes became slightly lighter after experiencing chronic inflammation. "I was blind in one eye for many years, and nobody knew," she revealed to Cosmopolitan in 2011 (via TODAY). "I'm not blind anymore. I had surgery a couple of months ago. They cut it open and dropped a new lens in there."
