7 Celebs Who Wash Their Hair Without Shampoo
In yet another installment of celebrities with questionable personal hygiene habits, we'd like to present to you a growing list of celebs participating in the no poo trend, aka ditching shampoo in favor of something else — or even nothing at all. The idea behind the no-shampoo movement is that by foregoing shampoo, the healthy oils on the hair and scalp are no longer being stripped away. "There are a couple of salons in New York that are pushing it. Once I start hearing about it in my office, I know it has some type of following," Dr. Angela Lamb, the director of Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology, told CBS News in 2015 about the budding craze about haircare (or, in this case, lack thereof).
But is washing your hair every day actually bad for you? According to celebrity hairstylist David Babaii, the answer is a resounding no. "It's a myth that you can't wash your hair every day. I think that's a joke, and it's disgusting. The right products are out there, so you can wash it every day," Babaii told The Cut in 2016. Be that as it may, plenty of celebs, including Adele, James Corden, and Shailene Woodley, are dabbling in the no poo trend to varying degrees.
Adele's hairstylist isn't keen on 'shampooing too often'
Singer and songwriter Adele, famous for her iconic beehive coif, told Glamour in 2008 that she only rarely shampoos her voluminous, sky-high locks. "Last night I washed my hair with shampoo for the first time in two months," she confessed. But why, exactly? It's possible that she's just following the advice of her hairstylist, Sami Knight. In 2022, Knight told Woman & Home that, instead of shampoo, he recommends "using a soap-free high-quality wash" for haircare in an effort to keep the hair's natural oils intact.
James Corden uses soap but rarely shampoo
In 2022, comedian and television host James Corden confessed on his late-night talk and variety show "The Late Late Show" that he isn't big on shampoo. "I use soap, but I don't wash my hair. I wash it every two months," he revealed (via People). Alas, while many take part in a method referred to as water-only hair washing, board-certified dermatologist Adam Mamelak, M.D., cautioned against using water only all the time. "I suggest doing it one to two times a week in between your full wash day (which would consist of a non-sulfate shampoo and conditioner)," Mamelak told Byrdie in 2024.
Shailene Woodley's mantra is 'the oilier, the better'
When it comes to hair, actor Shailene Woodley prefers to keep it au naturel — but don't just take our word for it. "I only shampoo it like once a month — the oilier, the better," she told Into the Gloss in 2014. Alas, oilier isn't always better. A flaky scalp, irritation, and even inflammation are unpleasant conditions that can be triggered by not washing your hair for several days on end.
Simon Le Bon swaps shampoo for a Moroccan clay
Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon is a proud card-carrying member of the no-shampoo trend. "The best thing for a guy, if you want to keep your hair: don't use shampoo. That's my tip," the singer and musician said in a 2025 interview posted on the band's official website. According to Le Bon, who turned 68 in 2026, he opts for a mineral-rich Moroccan clay called ghassoul (also known as rhassoul), as well as apple cider vinegar from time to time as a conditioning treatment. The clay contains many minerals, including silica, which can aid with shedding dead skin cells and helps add shine to hair.
Kourtney Kardashian swaps her shampoo with apple cider vinegar 'every now and then'
In a now-unavailable 2017 post on Kourtney Kardashian's lifestyle and wellness website, Poosh, the reality star and entrepreneur revealed that she occasionally swaps traditional shampoo for apple cider vinegar. "It's known for holding in moisture without stripping your hair of its natural oils," she explained about her decision (via StyleCaster). But that's not all: Alternating this with shampoo could promote healthier hair growth, too.
Morgan Stewart uses apple cider vinegar to keep her hair fresh between washes
Speaking of apple cider vinegar (ACV), television personality and fashion influencer Morgan Stewart also swears by the stuff. "I don't like to over-wash my hair, especially with how fine it is — shampooing every day strips out all of the natural oils, drying out my hair," Stewart explained to Bustle in 2016, before noting that not washing her hair wasn't an option due to her thrice-weekly yoga regimen. (A predicament, indeed.) Thus, in lieu of shampoo and conditioner, she uses an ACV-based hair rinse.
Raise a glass to Suki Waterhouse's shampoo swap
Share a Coke... with your hair? British supermodel and actor Suki Waterhouse got everyone buzzing in 2015 when she talked about swapping shampoo for Coca-Cola — yes, as in the sugary, syrupy, carbonated soft drink. "I don't like my hair when it's washed — it's fine and limp — but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something," she told Us Weekly.
Many hair experts spoke out against the practice, including trichologist Phillip Kingsley, who told The Independent that while some ingredients in the beverage may give more volume to certain types of hair, it is not a suitable haircare substitute. "Instead it will leave dirt particles in the hair," he cautioned. "Longer term use will be unpleasant for the scalp and hair, from a condition point of view."
