Forget Vanity: Mindy Kaling's Actual Reason For Losing Weight Packs A Punch
Mindy Kaling doesn't see weight loss in the same light as her younger self. During a May 2026 interview with Bustle, "The Office" alum admitted that her primary motivation for weight loss in her earlier years was her own "vanity." However, as she grew older, she felt driven to work on herself so that she could add more years to her life and stick around for her little ones. "Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes," Kaling explained. "I had it on both sides of my family, and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me, and that's my goal." With this mindset change, the comedian no longer wakes up thinking about how good she looks, and instead just focuses on how healthy she feels.
Unsurprisingly, having a strong motivation for a fitness goal can make the journey a whole lot better. Chatting with AARP, Sofia Rydin-Gray, director of behavioral health at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center, said that almost everybody knows that weight loss is a matter of calories in and calories out at this point. According to her, people don't fall short of meeting their fitness goals due to a lack of knowledge but rather due to psychological factors that can be overcome with a healthy dose of motivation. Moreover, clinical psychologist Gary D. Foster said that people are more likely to achieve their weight loss goals if they anchor their journey in one of their core values and/or well-defined motivations. And it seems that Kaling did just that.
Mindy Kaling's perspective on weight loss has changed in more ways than one
Speaking to Today in May 2022, Mindy Kaling confessed she had realized she wasn't someone who could permanently put her love for food on the back burner. Instead of fighting against her desires and making herself miserable in the process, Kaling worked with them and practiced moderation. In a May 2024 interview with Prevention, the comedian shared that she kept her diet simple, noting, "For me, at this point in my life, I feel like I know what I'm supposed to be eating—you know, more leafy green vegetables and keeping red meat to a minimum—and for me personally, I also try to keep dairy at a minimum." Although the "Inside Out" voice actor admittedly didn't always meet her nutritional goals, her desire to remain healthy for her kids motivated her to keep trying.
Additionally, Kaling had also managed to find joy in working out. During her chat with Today, she said that she initially believed that exercising had to be a grueling 45-minute run. However, she eventually realized that movement didn't have to be punishment. So, Kaling opted to stay active every single day of the week by going on walks. Instead of overcomplicating things and tracking her daily steps, she would try to go on short walks throughout the day whenever she had a moment. With that, it seems that Kaling knows all about the easy ways to turn daily errands into exercise. Considering what happens to your body when you take a walk every day, it's safe to say Kaling made a great decision.
