Celebrities Over 50 Who Absolutely Love The Process Of Aging
In a world where cosmetic tweaks are increasingly becoming the norm for people of all ages, many celebrities over the age of 50 have chosen to fully embrace their aging instead of trying to conceal it. Living in a society where ageism is common can make it difficult for people from all walks of life to accept the natural process. In fact, research has even clearly revealed the prevalence of ageism and its impact on health.
A 2008 study in Ageing & Society showed that women between the ages of 50 and 70 were more likely to want to tweak their appearance in one way or another due to motivations primarily guided by ageism, including "the fight against invisibility, a life-long investment in appearance, the desire to attract or retain a romantic partner, and employment related-ageism." For public figures, many of these pressures may be felt even more intensely since they are regularly subject to the public's harsh judgment. They naturally may even feel the need to conform to Hollywood's unrealistic standards.
Notably, studies have shown that your attitude towards aging can influence your health as you get older. A 2016 study in Personality and Individual Differences found that people who viewed aging in a negative light were more likely to have cognitive impairments than those who saw it as a good thing. Additionally, a 2015 study in PLOS One showed that people who saw their aging as a bad thing had slower walking speeds than those who didn't. With all this in mind, it seems that the celebrities over 50 who have decided to cherish the process of aging might just have made a better choice for their mental and physical health.
Hoda Kotb believes that the 50s are one of the best decades of a woman's life
During a 2017 episode of "Today," Hoda Kotb got emotional as she thought back to the struggles she endured at 43, with her marriage to Burzis Kanga ending, her concurrent breast cancer diagnosis, and her feelings of intense dissatisfaction with her job. However, nearly a decade later, she had the family life of her dreams because she got to spend her days with her adopted daughter, Hayley, and her then-partner, Joel Schiffman.
Likewise, in a 2022 episode of "Today with Hoda and Jenna," Kotb said that 50s were a magical time for women as they entered the decade after facing countless life experiences that helped them know themselves better than ever. She went on to impart a pearl of wisdom on aging to Jenna Bush Hager, saying, "Your best years — your most confident, your clearest years — are ahead for you." Meanwhile, in a 2025 interview with Country Living, the former "Today" host said that she believed a person's soul was timeless. To make her case, she pointed out that she had seen vibrant 90-year-olds and 30-year-olds who didn't share the same zest for life.
Kotb then dispelled the notion that aging negatively impacted beauty. "[Beauty is] how you walk into a room — you set the temperature, you decide," she shared. "Beauty, by the way, is confidence. And I know that how we look affects how we feel; I feel the same way. I think it's when we put our focus on others and other things, [that] beauty comes out."
Tracee Ellis Ross looked forward to aging in her younger years
During a 2023 appearance on NPR's "It's Been A Minute" podcast, Tracee Ellis Ross said she especially "loved" aging because she recognized it was a privilege many people didn't get. Unsurprisingly, the "Black-ish" star also felt incredibly confident in her body in her 50s, even though it had been through numerous natural changes as she aged. She went on to gush about how her life experiences had enabled her to read the room better and learn to have stricter boundaries.
In a 2017 event for Women In The World, Ross similarly spoke highly about aging. "I've wanted to get older," she said. "I thought that the lines on a woman's face were evidence of her story and the life that she had lived." As a result, she was naturally happy to see lines forming under her eyes because they were a testament to the experiences she had in life. Meanwhile, in a 2022 interview with The Guardian, the "Girlfriends" alum said that while there were moments she felt insecure about her age, she ultimately didn't find much comfort in trying to conceal it either.
Additionally, she couldn't help but roll her eyes at Hollywood's fixation with being young forever. While chatting with Glamour in 2022, Ross admitted that she also couldn't understand why people were so obsessed with anti-aging solutions. After stating that being young undoubtedly had its advantages, she said, "If we would let go of that, people could really just revel in how much deeper and more beautiful people get as they get older."
Angelina Jolie views aging as a 'victory'
Speaking to Vogue in 2021, Angelina Jolie shared that aging felt "like a victory instead of a sadness" because her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, had passed away at the age of 56. Although the "Maria" star already felt incredibly confident in her 40s, she still knew that her 50s would only transform her for the better.
During a 2018 interview with InStyle (via People), Jolie revealed another reason why she loved aging. "I look in the mirror and I see that I look like my mother, and that warms me," she admitted. "I also see myself aging, and I love it because it means I'm alive — I'm living and getting older." Additionally, in a 2017 Hello! Magazine interview, Jolie said that her perspective on life and aging had shifted after she had faced health struggles over the past decade and focused on raising her children. In the aftermath, the "Maleficent" star realized that nothing was more important than being healthy and ensuring her children were in good health.
During her 2024 chat with The Times, Jolie said that her career had also continued to thrive as she aged since she had been able to land better acting gigs. "I don't think about it in terms of roles offered but in terms of life experience you contribute," Jolie added. When 49-year-old Jolie spoke to IndieWire in 2024, she didn't mince her words while addressing aging: "I do feel like an older woman now and I embrace that."
Justine Bateman got to the bottom of her fears about aging and never looked back
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2021, Justine Bateman recalled how she had Googled herself when she was 41 and found that one of the autocomplete results was about her aging. At the time, she had regrettably let the Internet chatter about her aging get to her. During a 2023 appearance on "Today," the "Family Ties" alum shared that she had eventually begun to feel that the fear of aging had actually been manufactured by entities that stood to profit from it in one way or another. Jason Bateman's elder sister explained that this fear that had been instilled in women could make them question how aging would affect their employment opportunities, love life, and numerous other aspects of their lives.
Once Justine got to the bottom of her own fears, she developed a newfound perspective on her own aging. During a 2021 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the filmmaker shared that although she wasn't oblivious to the signs of aging on her face, she chose to see them as positives instead of negatives. "I think about how many tears have come through this face, how much joy, how much exhaustion or exuberance — that's an incredible collection of experience that this really small area of my body has taken on," she added.
Meanwhile, in her Entertainment Tonight interview, Justine encouraged those who were negatively commenting on her aging to carry on with their work since it was only a reflection of who they were and not an accurate picture of who she was.
Jamie Lee Curtis is completely 'pro-aging'
Speaking at the Radically Reframing Aging Summit (via Today) in 2022, Jamie Lee Curtis said she wishes the word "anti-aging" could be removed from the dictionary. The Oscar winner then stated that she was "pro-aging" because she wanted to wholly embrace the natural process instead of running from it. Meanwhile, during a 2025 appearance on NPR's "Wild Card with Rachel Martin" podcast, Curtis shared that she believed that although people might alter their appearances through facial editing apps or plastic surgery, the truth of what they looked like would still appear in the mirror to them.
By that time, Curtis had no desire to disguise what she looked like. Speaking to The Guardian in July 2025, the "Freaky Friday" star claimed that there had been a "genocide of a generation of women by the cosmeceutical industrial complex, who've disfigured themselves." Moreover, when she appeared on "Today" in 2022, she called out celebrities who posted heavily filtered photos of themselves. As for the "Halloween" star herself, she was more than happy to let herself look like her real-life self on the big screen because she felt it would send a message out that it was okay to age naturally.
During a 2024 appearance on "Today," 65-year-old Curtis said she was thriving in her professional and personal life as she aged. "I'm much less hard on myself," she said. "I'm very much in acceptance of what I look like and I own what I think and feel. And that, to me, is what maturity is. You own what you think and feel.
