5 Celebrities Whose Workout Routines Keep Them Looking & Feeling Great After 50

Add Health Digest on Google:

Many celebrities have discovered that the key to staying healthy in their 50s and beyond isn't in wellness fads but in tried-and-true, expert-recommended practices like exercising regularly. Many A-listers have discussed how consistent physical activity has been a game-changer for their physical and mental health, but it's important to remember that experts also recommend starting slowly with exercise, especially if it's been a while since your last workout. You don't want to accidentally pull or sprain something! That said, adults should aim to get in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every week, and at least two days should be dedicated to strength-training.

When we listen to how celebrities work out after turning 50, it's clear that finding forms of movement that leave you energized and happy, rather than drained all the time, is vital for building a consistent workout routine. For some celebrities, that's strength-training, which improves balance to prevent falls, promotes bone and joint health, and provides mental health benefits. Others prefer gentler forms of movement like yoga that help improve balance, mobility, and flexibility. A few A-listers even find that a long walk can clear their minds and get their heart rates up. Here are the celebs we're taking notes from, from Ernie Hudson to Lisa Rinna.

Ernie Hudson has several practical reasons for practicing strength-training in his 80s

As Ernie Hudson approached his 80s, he only grew more determined to stick to his workout routine. In January 2026, the 80-year-old "Ghostbusters" star told the "Today" show hosts that he doesn't have much interest in spending hours at the gym. Instead, he prefers doing 100 pushups a day as well as other strength-training exercises like planks and squats. For Hudson, strength-training isn't about lifting the heaviest possible weights; it's a way to stay agile and maintain his physique for his career.

Meanwhile, in a February 2026 interview with Men's Health, the "Toy Story 5" voice actor shared that obesity and other health issues affecting the African American community more adversely motivates him to prioritize exercising more. What's more, he hopes his strength-training routine will also help keep him limber and prevent falls as he ages.

Hudson openly sang his workout routine's praises during an April 2026 chat with Yahoo!. "The consistency of my physical activity has paid off in a way that I didn't expect," the great-grandfather of three said. "I wouldn't go out and run a marathon, but the things I need to do, I feel great doing them. I guess I'm surprised. I feel as good as I've ever felt — and I've had two bouts of cancer." If you didn't know, prostate cancer was found in Hudson in 1998, while his rectal cancer was uncovered in 2011, but he recovered from both. Ultimately, while on the "Today" show, he said his discipline in his workout routine also serves as a reminder of what he can accomplish if he puts his mind to it.

J.K. Simmons' biceps caused quite the stir on the Internet

In June 2016, a photo of then-61-year-old J.K. Simmons' biceps took the Internet by storm. The chatter prompted the "Whiplash" star to tell Business Insider the same month that he'd become serious about strength-training about seven years prior. Back then, Simmons had lost a significant amount of weight and felt more determined than ever to remain in shape.

Throughout his fitness journey, the Oscar winner and his trainers made tweaks to his routine to accomplish his goals, which have oscilatted between getting leaner and bulkier. Simmons told Men's Health in November 2024 that when he isn't working out to alter his physique for a role, he trains with moderate weights for around an hour. What's more, the "Spider-Man" actor, who turned 71 in 2026, stressed that he doesn't skip leg days because he knows having a strong core and legs is vital for someone his age.

Discussing his major motivators for working out, Simmons said, "Some of it is working on the movie muscles, but a lot of it is just trying to stay healthy." The iconic character actor also noted that exercising regularly has been beneficial for his mental well-being, saying, "When I don't make time to work out, I don't feel as good." However, he stressed that he doesn't need a grueling 90-minute workout session to reap all these benefits and, sometimes, a 30-minute session on an exercise bike does the trick. Biking is a low-impact cardio exercise that benefits workout routines by strengthening leg muscles and aiding joint mobility.

Trinny Woodall needs to work out at least three times a week

Speaking to Good Housekeeping for its June 2026 issue, 62-year-old Trinny Woodall revealed that getting in three workouts every week is an absolute must for her. Any less activity than that, she said, would affect the Trinny London founder's mental and physical state. Usually, Woodall's weekly workout routine involves three strength-training sessions, two yoga sessions, and weekend walks. While discussing her strength-training journey, the British entrepreneur said she lifted light weights for five years before deciding to push herself harder with heavier weights.

To encourage other women to lift heavy, Woodall pointed out what lifting really does to the body, specifically how it strengthens muscles and promotes bone health. The "Dragon's Den" guest judge revealed to Women's Health in November 2025 that her motivators to work out are practical long-term benefits rather than short-term aesthetic goals. "I want to be able to put my heavy suitcase over my head without somebody helping me. I want to protect my bones, so if I fall at 80, I get up again," Woodall explained. "And I want to be strong now, because if you feel strong, your mind feels strong, and you have that feeling of anything's possible."

In September 2023, Woodall told Glossy that working out regularly is a means for her to show some love and care for her body, which she knows will be ultimately reflected back to her. Her personal trainer, Nathalie Hayward, later told Women's Health in January 2025 that Woodall also practices self-love by prioritizing rest and recovery after workouts.

Lisa Rinna has stayed consistent with exercising for decades

As she explained to Parade in January 2009, Lisa Rinna revealed that her fitness journey unofficially began when her parents encouraged her to play tennis as a 7-year-old. After playing the sport competitively for years, the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" alum gravitated to jazzercise at 16. Rinna, who turned 63 in 2026, told Us Weekly in May 2024 that working out has remained a consistent part of her life since her teen years.

The reality TV star also told "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" viewers in September 2015 that prioritizing movement became second nature to her after years of consistency. Rinna then explained why regular physical activity is non-negotiable, saying, "I'm always doing something ... because [it makes me] feel better," she continued. "If I feel better, I'm nicer. If I'm nicer, my life goes better." After years of experimenting with different workouts, Rinna has found yoga, SoulCycle classes, and hiking the most effective forms of movement for her.

The model added to Us Weekly that she is particularly partial to yoga, and the exercise has been a regular part of her work routine for over two decades. "I think most consistently practicing yoga has been the most helpful in keeping myself grounded," Rinna explained. However, in a September 2015 blog post, Rinna stressed that she isn't too big on following a rigid workout routine and believes that it is best for people to cycle through different forms of movement they enjoy. Over a decade later, she told USA Today in March 2026 that she has grown mindful of how she works out because she doesn't want to push herself past her limits in her 60s.

Angela Bassett signed up for boxing lessons at 67

Chatting with Today.com in August 2025, then-67-year-old Angela Bassett shared that staying active has remained a priority as she's aged. The "Black Panther" star elaborated on her motivations for staying active, saying, "If you prioritize movement and health now, it will affect, I think, how we age and who we are as mature adults." She later added that regular exercise supports her career and helps her accomplish her duties as a mother and a wife, noting, "I work hard every day or most days, and I can do that because I keep myself in good health."

Although some issues, like her knees and lower back, prevent Bassett from working out with the same intensity that she did in her younger years, she's still determined to remain fit. As a result, she signed up for boxing lessons in 2025. For Bassett, working out doesn't have to be complicated. The "Strange Days" pointed out to Woman's Day in November 2020 that even something as simple as walking around outside can be a wonderful form of movement.

During her walks, Bassett sometimes incorporates high-intensity interval training (HIIT) principles and alternates between speed-walking for 30 seconds and walking at a normal pace for a minute. Bassett couldn't imagine that someone who had done that 20-minute walking circuit would regret getting some movement in afterward. In fact, HIIT workouts are notably great for people who are short on time because they prompt the body to continue burning calories even after your movements are done.
