Before And After Photos Of Mindy Kaling's Mission To Lose Weight For Her Kids

Much ado has been made about actor, comedian, and writer Mindy Kaling's dramatic weight loss over the years. But while many were quick to chalk up Kaling's quest for a slimmer figure as nothing more than a vapid vanity project, Kaling's actual reason for losing weight was far more serious. 

As it turns out, for Kaling, it's all about wanting to "live at least 20 more years" for her three kids, Katherine, Spencer, and Anne. "When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes. I had it on both sides of my family, and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me, and that's my goal," Kaling told Bustle in May 2026, referencing the link between excess weight and type 2 diabetes. 

According to Kaling, it was that exact mindset that ultimately tipped the scales in her favor. Once she began to focus on mindful eating, working out in ways that brought her joy, and staying hydrated, as opposed to trying to adhere to restrictive crash diets, she successfully started losing weight. "I'm never going [to] be someone who can just have spinach and salmon every day," she joked about her love of food to Today in 2025. Even so, Kaling's approach has clearly paid off for her, and she's got the before-and-after pics to prove it.

Mindy Kaling is no stranger to awards shows. Over the years, Kaling has graced many star-studded events with her presence, including the Golden Globes. And, as evidenced by photos from her on the awards event's red carpet in 2009 and 2025, the before-and-after looks like something straight out of a time machine. 

Fortunately for Kaling, her attitude toward the events and prepping for them has changed, too. Prior to her weight loss, Kaling wasn't exactly a fan of finding a dress for the big events. "Trying on gowns is demoralizing. I'm smaller on top than I am on the bottom, so gowns rarely fit me well," she once confessed in an op-ed for Glamour about finding the right dress to flatter her figure. Following her dramatic weight loss, however, it appears she had a change of heart. "I don't think I've ever landed on a gown as quickly as I did with @erinwalshstyle for this absolutely stunning silver leaf @oscardelarenta gown," she gushed on Instagram in March 2025 about her dress for the Oscars. As the old saying goes, if you look good, you feel good. 

Mindy Kaling's before-and-after transformation was on major display when she participated in the viral social media trend of posting photos from 2016. In fact, Kaling was so worried that her throwback photos from ten years earlier would be jarring that she almost didn't share them at all. "I saw this 2016 trend and loved it and almost didn't post because I look different but these pics are too fun not to share. (I wonder if anyone else can relate lol) but I loved this time and all my memories from then, so had to post! enjoy!!!!" Kaling shared to Instagram on January 15, along with a carousel of photos from the particular year in question — all pre-weight loss. 

With the throwback photos juxtaposed beside the photos from her previous Instagram post, featuring her on the red carpet while attending the Women's Wear Daily Style Awards just days earlier on January 9, it was hard to argue with Kaling's sentiments about the stark contrast in her appearance. Still, many in the comments section were supportive. "This is the Mindy we fell in love with. Not your weight, not your dress size but the talented writer, creator and comedic genius you are," one encouraging user said. 

A picture is worth a thousand words. Case in point: this before-and-after of Mindy Kaling with her longtime friend turned boyfriend turned friend again, B.J. Novak, circa 2005 and 2025, respectively. The story goes that Kaling first met Novak in 2004 while both were working as writers and actors on "The Office." Fortunately, as evidenced in this before-and-after photo, the friendship has stood the test of time and all of the changes that come with that, including Kaling's transition to motherhood and her mission to become the healthiest version of herself. "The truth is that B.J. is so much more like family now than a platonic friend. He's the godfather to my daughter," Kaling told Good Housekeeping in 2019 (via People).

But as much as things change, they stay the same, too. "She is just so funny and interesting that I'll talk to her as long as she'll talk to me," Novak enthused to E! News' Erin Lim Rhodes and Will Marfuggi in May 2025 about his longstanding friendship with Kaling and their shared history together. 

Mindy Kaling's level of success was undeniable during her time as the creator, executive producer, writer, and lead star of "The Mindy Project." Still, it's only been onward and upward for Kaling — in more ways than one. In April 2026, Kaling turned up at the "Running Point" Season 2 Netflix premiere event — wherein she serves as the creator, writer, and executive producer for the comedy series — sporting a super svelte figure in a body-hugging black dress with a sheer top and ornate, sparkly crystal bra cups.

Alas, some social media users couldn't get over just how much weight Kaling had lost and weren't particularly happy about it. "The actress who plays Mindy she has lost so much weight," one user commented. And the naysayers weren't exactly wrong, either. As evidenced in a photo of Kaling from "The Mindy Project" days, the difference was striking. Still, one of Kaling's fans was quick to point out that Kaling has always been beautiful, no matter the number on a scale. "I'm so done with people saying this is a glow up — Her beauty has been immutable, I'm sorry those pea brains couldn't see it but glad they get the picture now," the user wrote.
