Trump's Swollen Ankles Have People Worried About His Health
On July 13, 2025, President Donald Trump made headlines at the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he made an appearance as a part of a broader effort to elevate U.S. involvement in global soccer ahead of next year's World Cup. However, as CNN reported, not all soccer fans were enthused about his attendance; some cheered when his image appeared briefly on the stadium scoreboard, but others booed. He was also booed later in the game as he presented medals to the players.
Due to pictures taken during the event, some are also expressing growing concern about the President's health. As shared by Hindsight Capital LLC on X, the photos of Trump reveal that he had visibly swollen ankles. Taken alongside other recent reports of the President dragging his foot and possibly wearing leg braces and/or a catheter bag, these images have many speculating whether this could be yet another warning sign that Trump's health might be on the decline.
What might be causing Trump's swollen ankles
As can be seen in the image shared on X, Trump's ankles appear swollen, and his shoelaces look like they have been loosened to accommodate the increased size of his feet. So far, however, no medical experts have stepped up to comment, and Trump himself has not released any statement.

WebMD explains that the most common causes of swollen feet and ankles are venous insufficiency, where weakened valves allow blood to pool in the legs, injuries like sprains or fractures that trigger inflammation, and prolonged standing or sitting, which increases pressure in leg vessels. Swelling of the legs can also be a sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), congestive heart failure, or kidney or liver disease, all of which impair fluid and blood circulation. Other frequent contributors include medication side effects — notably NSAIDs, blood pressure drugs, and steroids — and lymphedema, a lymphatic-system blockage causing fluid accumulation.
However, in the absence of an official statement from Trump's healthcare providers, we simply don't know what is causing his swollen ankles.
