The Cheeky On-Set Injury Robert Pattinson Faced Early On Filming Twilight
As the sparkling-skinned vampire, Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson's character was seen performing death-defying stunts. From leaping through trees to running incredible distances in a matter of seconds, the actor's physicality was used to achieve the image of the fantasy creature. However, his many, many stunts on set were not without injury.
As part of his role, and the story of the "Twilight" franchise as a whole, Pattinson had to perform a fair amount of fight sequences in addition to his other, less-contact-driven stunts. During one particular fight scene, things did not go as planned. In a 2012 conversation with MTV, the actor revealed, "We were doing the fight scene at the end of the first one, and I tore my glute — well, almost tore it, basically in my second shot of the whole movie, of the whole series" (via People).
His injury was quickly addressed on set by the production team. For the rest of the shooting day, Pattinson's cheeky injury would be treated by a physiotherapist who massaged the actor's muscles to help soothe his weakened glutes. Despite his pain, Pattinson's almost-torn muscle could have been a lot more serious, as torn glutes can result in serious hip pain and walking impairment.
Dangers of torn glutes
The butt is made up of three muscle sections called the gluteus medius, gluteus maximus, and gluteus minimus. These muscles run all along the outside of the butt, connecting to the lower back and upper thigh. Though they can be forgotten about, they are essential to walking, sitting, stabilizing your pelvis, and climbing stairs. So, if injured, these daily activities that many don't think twice about may become painful and even dangerous if the muscle is not treated.
It's not just film fight scenes that cause these muscles to tear, either. They can tear for all sorts of reasons, but the most common is physical exercise, from running to contact sports. With them causing difficulty walking, discomfort sitting, hip mobility impairment, and swelling, it's essential that these tears be treated properly. Like in Robert Pattinson's experience, massaging the muscle can help, as can anti-inflammatories, rest, and other physical therapy treatment plans. In more serious cases, surgery may be necessary.
However, the best option is probably treating the muscle before a tear ever happens. Completing stretches, strengthening your glutes through weight training, and practicing exercises with the proper form all work to prevent future tears.
Another injury in the Twilight franchise
Jackson Rathbone, who portrayed the "Twilight" franchise's Jasper, was another actor who sustained an injury while filming a fight scene for the vampire series. Back in 2009, during the preproduction of the third film in the franchise, "Eclipse," the actor was reading for a sequence that required a choreographed fight. In most cases of on-camera fight scenes, the actors are trained and rehearsed to prevent injury to themselves and each other.
Yet, despite the training, Rathbone ended up injured. Though the exact injury was not disclosed by the spokesperson for the film who broke the news, Rathbone was taken to a hospital. In a statement following the incident, the spokesperson from the production studio Summit Entertainment said, "Actor Jackson Rathbone of the Twilight Saga movies, was slightly injured yesterday during a fight scene rehearsal. As a precaution, he was driven to the hospital and checked out by a doctor. He's fine and is back at work on the set of Eclipse today"(via Perez Hilton).
