Female Celebs Who've Opened Up About Thinning Hair (Because It's Not Only Men Who Struggle)
Contrary to popular opinion, men aren't the only ones who have to worry about hair thinning as they age. "During menopause and perimenopause, estrogen — the hormone responsible for maintaining skin's collagen thickness — begins to decline," Dr. Neda Mehr, a board-certified dermatologist at Hoag, explained during a question-and-answer session for a blog on the hospital's website. "Since our hair follicles reside in our collagen layer of the skin (the dermis), and estrogen is responsible for keeping this layer thick and healthy, the 'home' of the hair follicle shrinks as estrogen declines, leading to weaker follicles and increased hair shedding," she explained. Alas, menopause and perimenopause aren't the only culprits when it comes to female hair thinning. A 2023 study published in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology (via National Library of Medicine) found that a staggering 91.8% of women experienced postpartum hair loss.
Fortunately, many female celebrities are coming forward, using their platforms to share their personal experiences with hair thinning in an effort to raise awareness of what appears to be an increasing problem among women, as well as dispel the top myths regarding hair loss. "I have not seen a slowdown, just a steady increase in [people] coming forward seeking advice or help with hair loss," Kelly Morrell, the creator of Scalp Confidential and Calecim Hair Loss Treatment expert, told Elle in September 2025.
Kristin Davis served as an ambassador for a volumizing haircare system
Kristin Davis — an actor who is practically known for her thick brunette mane — embarked on a long journey to find a solution after noticing subtle signs that she was losing her hair. "My hair just was not what it used to be," she confessed during a candid interview with WWD in 2017. "It was very fine, like it had gone away, there just was hardly any hair there....I hadn't been worrying about it — I have my daughter — but when I tried to do something or had to go somewhere I was like, 'where is my hair?'" she recalled.
Fortunately for Davis, she not only found an answer to her problem but also landed herself a gig as a global ambassador for Volaire, a volumizing haircare system. "I am so excited to share with you guys that I have found a new product that I LOVE for my hair," she penned in an Instagram post in June 2017.
Ricki Lake experienced a newfound confidence after shaving her head
In January 2020, famous actor, producer, and talk show host Ricki Lake opened up to the world about her own decades-long struggle with hair loss. "It has been debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things. There have been a few times where I have even felt suicidal over it," she confessed in a long emotional post on Instagram, along with photos of herself sporting a freshly shaved head.
One year later, however, she appeared on "Good Morning America" sporting a head full of thick, silver hair. "I've come to embrace not only my hair that has grown back but also the color. This is my natural color, and we, as a society, as women, we're not supposed to embrace, you know, aging, but I, in some ways, feel as best I've ever felt," she declared. Lake went on to say that the best advice she could give other women dealing with thinning hair would be not to hide it and to love themselves despite the hair loss. "If I can help one woman by sharing my story, it's worth it, you know," she declared.

Christina Ricci said her hair thinning was a result of both postpartum and perimenopause symptoms
The story goes that actor Christina Ricci first began dealing with hair thinning following the birth of her third child. Then, when perimenopause hit, it only exacerbated the hair loss. "I went straight from postpartum to perimenopause, and I honestly thought it might break me," she revealed in a paid partnership video with Nutrafol (via Facebook).
According to Ricci, however, it was her husband Mark, a hairstylist, who first recommended the hair growth supplement to her. Fortunately for Ricci, she said "it really worked," citing that her "hair shedding slowed down," and that her hair "just felt stronger."
But don't just take Ricci's word for it. Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologic surgeon, also agrees that Nutrafol is a great option for women who are experiencing hair loss or hair thinning, and he even recommends it to his own patients. "This uses highly concentrated botanicals to address every stage of the growth cycle," Engelman told Prevention. "It has excellent clinical studies to support its efficacy."
Postpartum hair loss caught Rihanna off guard
Singer, beauty empire owner, and mother of two, Rihanna, has also spoken out about her own shocking experience with postpartum hair loss. "I didn't expect it to happen in waves. I thought it would just happen and grow back," she confessed to Refinery29 (via People) while attending a party unveiling Fenty Hair on June 10, 2024. "At that point, you're just like alright enough is enough."
Fortunately, as the CEO of a billion-dollar beauty brand, she had many resources at her disposal to help her combat her postpartum hair loss. According to Rihanna, however, she ultimately opted to get "more creative and clever," with hairstyles, even leaning into her natural curls — with the help of Fenty's lineup of hair products, of course. " I want to look fly, but I want my hair to be healthy. How do I do that?" she asked. "All of my products need to strengthen and repair while I'm out just being fabulous," she declared.
