Jim Carrey Goes Viral For His 'Unrecognizable' Face Change — And Frankly, The Chatter Is Careless
On February 26, actor and comedian Jim Carrey got everyone talking when he bounded onto the stage and received the 2026 honorary César Award at the César Awards in Paris. Unfortunately for Carrey, however, onlookers weren't exactly reveling in his big win. Upon receiving the award, many viewers shaded the celebrity, citing that his famous face was no longer recognizable. "I can still see the Jim Carrey in him but then the botox, fillers and implants really do make his face unrecognizable," someone tweeted. Meanwhile, another asked, "What happened to Jim Carrey?" Some even went as far as to allege that the person who accepted the award was not Carrey at all. "Jim Carrey doesn't look, sound or behave like Jim Carrey. Actors playing actors," one user tweeted in support of a rampant theory that Carrey enlisted a body double for the event.
Sadly, all of the speculation regarding Carrey's "unrecognizable" appearance is not only ridiculous, but it's also, quite frankly, careless. Over the years, many celebrities have been criticized for their changing appearances, only for the public to learn later that they were dealing with some serious physical and mental health issues. As the old saying goes, you never really know what someone else is going through. Yes, Kate Middleton and Chadwick Boseman internet trolls — we're looking at you.
Amy Schumer fielded a lot of speculation about her own swollen face
As you may recall, back in 2023, Amy Schumer endured much speculation about her own so-called "moon face" — a condition in which "fat deposits build up along the sides of your face, causing severe swelling," per the Cleveland Clinic. "The internet really came for me," Schumer dished during a January 2025 appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast.
Fortunately for Schumer, the trolling ultimately led to a concrete diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome, a condition that stems from having too much cortisol in your body for an extended period of time. "Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were, like, 'No, no ... something's really up. Your face looks so crazy,'" Schumer said. Still, Schumer was careful to note that the online commentary did take a toll on her. "Aside from fears about my health, I also had to be on camera having the internet chime in," she later confessed to "News Not Noise" founder Jessica Yellin about the harrowing time in her life.
Antidepressants can cause weight gain
Similarly, Jim Carrey's appearance at the César Awards could simply be a side effect of a medication. Over the years, Carrey has never shied away from his issues with mental health. "I was on Prozac for a long time. It may have helped me out of a jam for a little bit, but people stay on it forever. I had to get off at a certain point because I realized that, you know, everything's just OK," he confessed during an interview with "60 Minutes" in November 2004.
It's entirely plausible (and commendable, we might add) that Carrey has once again turned to medications to help treat depression. And as it turns out, there are a few things that happen to your body when you start taking antidepressants — including weight gain in some cases. "Weight gain is common among antidepressant users, even if the amounts gained on average are modest," Dr. Roy Perlis, the associate chief of psychiatric research at Massachusetts General Hospital, told Harvard Health Publishing in August 2024.
Amid all of the careless chatter, the fan account "JimCarreyTheBest" took to Instagram to implore people to refrain from discussing Carrey's appearance. "If you're about to say 'This is not Jim' please consider," the post urged, before including the number to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
