The FDA Is Recalling Thousands Of CBD Gummies - Here's What To Know

Around six out of 10 people say they've tried cannabidiol (CBD) products (60%), and even more see CBD as a safer choice than alcohol (65%), according to a 2024 survey from Forbes Health. However, some CBD items may not be safe for consumers — and for rather unexpected reasons.

For instance, on September 25, 2025, several CBD gummies that were manufactured and distributed by Colorado-based company Extract Labs were named in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall. The voluntary recall event affected specific batches of four of the brand's CBD gummy flavors: Elderberry, Blue Razz, Mai Tai, and Sugar-free Mixed Berry.

What was the unusual impetus for the recall? The CBD gummies had possibly come in contact with peanut proteins.

Peanuts are one of the most common food allergens. For up to 2% of individuals in the U.S., exposure to certain proteins found in peanuts can lead to mild, moderate, or even life-threatening reactions (The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology). These reactions can run the gamut from rashes and hives to a rapid pulse, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

Proceeding safely after product recalls

The Extract Labs CBD gummy recall was classified as a "Class II" recall by the FDA. (Other Class II recalls also happened in 2025, including the largest deodorant recall ever.) A Class II recall is reserved for products that, when consumed, may lead to "temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences" (via the FDA). And while critical respiratory issues don't seem to line up with that description, most of the other possible peanut allergy responses do.

A total of 61,460 CBD gummies were part of the recall event. Therefore, if you discover that you have any bottles of the recalled products, you may want to return them to the place you purchased them for a refund per FDA recommendations.

It's important to remember that simply because the FDA has instituted a recall on a CBD product doesn't mean that the agency has approved the product. The FDA notes that despite consumer interest in consuming items made from cannabis-derived ingredients like CBD, it has only sparingly given approval for a handful of drugs that contain CBD. Extract Labs CBD offerings are not among those products.
