4 Celebs Over 60 Who Underwent Major Weight Loss Transformations
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), overweight and obesity are quite common in the United States. Per 2017-2018 NHANES data, 30.7% of adults are classified as being overweight, while 42.4% of individuals have obesity, and 9.2% have severe obesity. Given how prevalent overweight and obesity are, it's perhaps not too surprising that even celebrities can have difficulties with weight gain.
Beyond the obvious concerns that high-profile individuals may have about maintaining their looks, the NIDDK explains that overweight and obesity present numerous health risks, including, but not limited to, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Furthermore, older adults may experience joint and mobility issues and a loss of independence, making it especially important for them to maintain a healthy weight as they age (per National Council on Aging). However, as a 2018 study published in Current Obesity Reports illustrates, even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% can reduce your risk for the many health issues associated with carrying excess pounds.
Given these facts, celebrities are just like the rest of us, turning to various methods to lose weight and improve their health, not just so they can age well, but also so they can continue to pursue the work they love. These are a few of the inspiring celebrities over the age of 60 who have undergone major weight loss transformations in recent years.
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg said the wakeup call that she needed to lose weight occurred when she was in the midst of making the 2022 movie "Till." Speaking to Kelly Clarkson in an interview for "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Goldberg revealed that a woman thought she was wearing a fat suit. "I was indignant, this is not a fat suit this is me," said the star. Using that moment as motivation, Goldberg says she went from weighing 300 pounds to losing "almost two people" (via Today).
The talk show host has also spoken out about how she used the GLP-1 medication Mounjaro (tirzepatide) to aid her weight loss, saying, "People need to stop judging everybody" (via Yahoo!). In an October 2025 interview, Goldberg said she is now healthy. However, she jokingly added that she feels "cold as hell" with "no a-s" (via Daily Mail). The latter, which many have dubbed "Ozempic butt," is actually a common complaint among GLP-1 users. Many also report having "Ozempic face."
Oprah Winfrey
It's no secret that Oprah Winfrey has battled for decades with her weight, famously pulling a wagon loaded with 67 pounds of fat across the stage of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1988 after she lost an equivalent amount via Optifast. Winfrey, however, said she quickly regained the weight because, as she put it, "my metabolism was shot" (via Oprah.com). Speaking of her ongoing struggles, she told People, "It was public sport to make fun of me for 25 years. I have been blamed and shamed, and I blamed and shamed myself."
In an interview with Today (via People), Winfrey said it was a desire to preserve her mobility that led to her current weight loss. "I had been becoming more and more debilitated to the point where it was hard to walk down even two steps just to get into the car," she said. After trying many plans over the years, and even purchasing a stake in WeightWatchers in 2015, the media mogul said it was "a relief" and "a gift" to be prescribed a GLP-1 medication, adding, "I'm absolutely done with the shaming from other people and particularly myself."
Rosie O'Donnell
In January 2023, Rosie O'Donnell shared a video on her TikTok saying that she had started taking Mounjaro for diabetes. However, she noted that one of the side effects was weight loss. Most recently, in August of 2025, the talk show host posted to Instagram, showing her progress and explaining that she is "shocked" that she now wears a size 12. Reflecting on her 50-pound loss, the star told her followers, "I can't believe this is me now" (via Yahoo!).
However, it's not just Mounjaro to which she credits her slimmed-down figure. She says eating healthier, cooking for herself, and making changes like cutting out Diet Coke have also helped. According to Yahoo!, O'Donnell also enjoys the popular "Tiffany's plate" trend from TikTok, which involves creating a healthy charcuterie board to eat throughout the day. O'Donnell's version includes Babybel reduced-fat cheese, eggs, sausage, olives, mushrooms, chicken breast, fruit, and vegetables.
Kathy Bates
Kathy Bates is currently making headlines for her turn in CBS' new "Matlock" reboot, but it's not just her acting skills that have people talking. The actress is also showing off a 100-pound weight loss. "I don't think I've been this slim since I was in college," she raved to Variety (via Prevention).
Bates says it's not just about looking better, however, explaining that being overweight was affecting her work. "I had to sit down every moment that I could. It was hard for me to walk," she said. Bates added that diabetes runs in her family, "and I really didn't want to live with that."
The actress has also emphasized that, while she did lose the final 20 pounds through the GLP-1 drug Ozempic (semaglutide) (via People), she lost 80 pounds over the course of about seven years through diet and lifestyle changes. One big part of those changes, she told Extra (via Prevention), was a mindfulness exercise that she learned from her niece. "After you eat for 20, 30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh. It's communication between stomach and brain telling you you had enough," she explained. According to Bates, she learned that if you listen for that sigh and push away your plate for five minutes, you realize that you're satisfied and don't need to eat more.
