What Was Eric Dane's Cause Of Death? His Death Certificate Highlights Tragic Reality Of ALS

In April 2025, actor Eric Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Less than a year later, in February 2026, Dane's family issued a statement that he had died. Yet Dane's cause of death wasn't the ALS itself, but complications arising from what ALS does to the body.

ALS (sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease) causes progressive neuromotor weakening. Many people, including Dane, first experience problems moving a limb, which is why they turn to doctors. In Dane's case, he began to lose strength in his right hand, a concern that eventually led to his positive ALS diagnosis.

Since there are no medicines or treatments to cure ALS, the disease gradually progresses, affecting the neuromotor systems. Dane's death certificate indicates that he died from respiratory failure, which is the most frequent cause of death from ALS. Two other less common causes of death for ALS patients include cardiovascular failure and pneumonia, as noted in a 2023 study in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology.

Understanding the progression of ALS

Why does respiratory failure top the list of reasons for death for those with ALS? The simple answer is that the body's respiratory functions are controlled by the motor neurons. Consequently, as neuromotor operations begin to fail, breathing becomes more difficult. Often, ALS patients require the assistance of ventilators to stay alive. (It's not clear if Dane was on a ventilator.)

Dane shared that he first experienced weakness in his right hand in late 2023 or early 2024, meaning he died around two years after the onset of his symptoms. However, some individuals with ALS survive for up to five years after diagnosis, according to a 2019 article in Chest.

Regrettably, ALS currently has no cure, and is thus a fatal diagnosis. That said, the ALS Association explains that four medications (tofersen, edaravone, riluzole, and dextromethorphan HBr and quinidine sulfate) may treat and help slow the progression of ALS symptoms in some people, giving them a better and healthier quality of life.

Facing a terminal condition courageously

During the short time that Dane had between his ALS diagnosis and death, he became a visible and active face for ALS support, research, and conversation. As his family shared with Us Weekly after his death, "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight."

Though Dane once admitted that no one would blame him for dealing with his condition in silence, he added that he nonetheless felt compelled to make sure that he used his visibility to share the realities of the disease. During an ALS virtual event in late 2025, he commented, "I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day," but he added that he was glad to learn that "I wasn't built like that." As a result of the attention he gave to the disease, he was named the ALS Network's Advocate of the Year in January 2026 (via The Hollywood Reporter).

In fact, Dane continued working in the midst of dealing with ALS. Among his last roles was in the drama "Euphoria."
