Donald Trump's Preferred Steak Order Isn't Very Healthy (Unless He Makes This One Choice)
It's hardly a secret that President Donald Trump's diet is full of delicious food options that aren't exactly the most nutritious ones. Much has been written about Trump's dietary preferences, and there's enough information out there for you to get a good idea of what you'll find in Trump's daily diet.
Perhaps the least surprising fact about Trump's food choices is that he likes steak. According to The Palm Beach Post, in 2016, his former Mar-a-Lago butler, Tony Senecal, revealed his ex-boss's favorite steak order: "He liked his meat well-done and he'd say, 'No garbage with it.'" The "garbage" food that Donald Trump refuses to eat? Vegetables, apparently, as well as any accoutrements that one would typically expect to come with steak (e.g., garnishes, sauces, or relish).
While we're not entirely sure what cut of steak Trump likes to order, the absence of vegetables accompanying his plate is indicative of his general opinion toward leafy greens. That said, by specifically requesting a cut of steak that's mostly lean meat — like chopped steak — the presidential steak can become a lot healthier.
Why chopped steak is a healthier choice
One might think that chopped steak and hamburger steak are essentially the same thing, but they're not. While both are made by taking ground beef and shaping it into a patty, the people who make chopped steak are a bit more particular about the kind of meat that goes into it. Specifically, it's mostly ground sirloin, which has less fat and more flavor. A hamburger steak, on the other hand, is made up of your usual ground meat, which tends to have higher fat content.
These differences profoundly impact how the two steaks taste after you cook them. A hamburger steak tends to be softer and tastier (because of the fat), while a chopped steak is denser and less tender. This is also the reason why chopped steaks work so well when they're served Salisbury steak-style (i.e., with brown gravy): the sauce serves as a good counterbalance to the meat's somewhat tougher texture. And for health-conscious diners, even the gravy can be made healthier by using ingredients that are lower in fat or with reduced sodium.
What is Donald Trump's favorite lunch?
Surprisingly, though, Donald Trump's favorite lunch is healthier than you'd expect, at least according to the account of Shannon Donnelly, a writer who, per The Palm Beach Post, has been on the Trump beat for quite a while. Reportedly, Trump likes to start the meal with a crab cocktail, followed by the main course: his mother's meatloaf recipe, which has ground beef, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, eggs, parsley, and breadcrumbs. Incidentally, chopped steak is also on the president's radar when it comes to lunch options, though he likes to have it with a side of mashed potatoes.
The rest of what we know about Trump's eating habits isn't very promising from a nutritional perspective. Aside from his well-documented love for Diet Coke, the president also likes to have sweets — everything from cakes to cookies to vanilla ice cream. And while Trump's aforementioned "favorite lunch" may skew on the healthier side of things, he has also been known to have "two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and a chocolate malt" for dinner (per The Palm Beach Post). So, in the end, it appears that while there are glimpses of healthier choices on Trump's plate, his overall diet still leans heavily toward indulgence over nutrition.
